Figma Weave permissions issue: fix access
Permission errors when generating usually come from file role, team policy, or an admin-level AI restriction.
Updated 8/13/2026
Three layers of permission
Weave access is gated at three levels, and all three must pass:
- File role. You need edit access to the file, not view or comment.
- Team or project role. Guests on a project frequently have edit rights on a file but no AI entitlement.
- Organisation policy. Admins can disable AI features, restrict them to selected teams, or cap per-seat usage.
Diagnosing quickly
Duplicate the file into your own drafts and run a short prompt. If it works there, the restriction is at the file or team level rather than the account level. If it fails there too, the restriction is on your account or the organisation.
Content and asset restrictions
Some organisations block AI use on files containing restricted branding or client assets. These policies produce a permission error rather than a generation error, which is why prompt changes never help.
What to ask your admin
Ask specifically whether AI features are enabled for your team, whether your seat has an AI allocation, and whether any per-file restrictions apply. Those three answers close out nearly every case.
